Our Ride Through Asia Minor.

London. Chapman and Hall, Limited, 1881. Stock ID #176117

Half title, linen-backed frontispiece map of Asia Minor showing the route of the Scott-Stevensons, viii + 400 pages, 22 x 14 cm, fine half red morocco 19th Century parliamentary binding, with the gilt arms of the New South Wales Library of Parliament on the front board, spine elaborately gilt, raised bands, marbled fore-edges, the map foxed, and the first four leaves of text, the final leaf and endpaper, otherwise clean and unmarked, the corners a trifle rubbed, but a handsome binding in very good condition

Esme Scott-Stevenson's husband, Andrew Scott-Stevenson, one of the heroes of the war in the Sudan and was Civil Commissioner of Kyrenia. She joined him in Cyprus in 1878 and remained there until about 1882. She was ideally placed to travel to some of the more exotic reaches of the Near and Middle East.

An interesting and observant account of their journey from Kyrenia to Beirut, Aleppo, Koniah, Karamania little known to her intended audience, which could not help but appeal to all those who might cast a longing look eastward 'in spite of the ruin past rulers had inflicted upon them, yet in which so rare a beauty still lingered.' (Saturday Review, November,1881).
