Mariners Temple at Simoda
(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). [ 1856.]. Stock ID #176480 A beautifully composed view of a Temple in Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a painting on the spot ("from nature") by William Heine and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life. Tinted lithograph with original hand colour 16 x 24.6 cm, 21.9 x 28.9 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, but in very good condition.
