Tinted lithograph 16 x 24.6 cm, 21.9 x 28.9 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned and two small marginal edge tears, but in very good condition.

A charming and detailed view in Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a painting on the spot by William Heine (the artist is depicted at the foot of surrounded by a family group) and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
