Tinted lithograph 15.1 x 22.8 cm, 21.9 x 28.5 cm (sheet), edges a little discoloured, very small marginal tear,one lower corner creased, but the image in very good condition.

Finely composed market street scene in Lew Chew (Ryukyu) by Wilhelm Heine on the spot ("From Nature") prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Heine's sensitive and tranquil views for the "Narrative" belied the tough, gunboat diplomacy at play in Perry's mission to Japan.
