[Japan]. Late Edo. Stock ID #176608 殿居囊 [Tonoibukuro], also known as 武家必擥殿居嚢(Buke hitsuran Tonoibukuro, can be roughly translated as "The Must Have Handbook for Samurai") was written and published by Oono Hiroki (1788-1841). It was intended as a handbook for samurai working for the Tokugawa government (Bakufu) during the Edo period. First published in two volumes in the years 1837-39 the work was issued in a compact size, so that they could be kept readily at hand, in a limited edition of only 300 copies. The set here is a manuscript copy of this work and is bound in three volumes. When referring to this item please quote stockid 176608.

The handbook covers diverse topics which are useful for those who worked at a castle, including the annual event calendar, list of titles and their tasks, mourning rituals for kins, information on Toshogu Temple in Nikko where the Tokugawa family was revered as divine and information on Edo Castle.
The author used a pen name, Fujiwara Ason, because he was worried about the government's reaction to such a book. Yet, his real identity was soon found out. He was captured and sent off to Tanba (north of Kobe) to be incarcerated, where he died in 1841. Since the original edition was very limited and banned by the government, the useful information contained in these pages was spread by the use of "underground" manuscript copies such as this set.
