3 woodblock printed volumes, complete. 22.5 x 15 cm, Volume 1: 9 + 19 double folded leaves; Volume 2: 53 double folded leaves; Volume 3: 48 double folded leaves, four hole stab Japanese style string binding, covers a little insect damaged, upper cover first volume torn with 1.5 x 0.5cm loss at edge, thread binding loosening on one volume place but the itself binding is still firm. Contents very clean and sound. Good set.

This introductory work on the United States political system, was based on Andrew White Young's work which he wrote for children. It was translated and transcribed by Uryu Mitora, later known as Uryu Hajime (瓜生寅) played an important role in introducing Western knowledge to Japan.

Uryu learned English, Dutch and Chinese and began teaching English at the Tokugawa government school before the Meiji Restoration. He became a Meiji government employee and worked in various ministries before later going into business and running a trading company. Uryu does not identify which Young's book his Japanese transcription was based on, but the book covers diverse topics, including political principles, the constitution, tax, voting and state laws. This book clearly shows how keen the Japanese were to learn about the United States so soon after the Meiji Restoration.
