Kuwagata Keisai (1764-1824), who initially was known as an artist under the name Kitao Masayoshi, was a well known ukiyo-e artist in the mid-Edo period. At the time he was as well known as Hokusai. In his early career, he illustrated numerous yellow cover books. In his thirties, he was employed by the lord of Tsuyama and promoted to a samurai rank. He mainly drew in a sophisticated style using abstract lines. This book shows a range of colour woodblock images of the artist's work mainly of day-to-day items such as vegetables, birds and animals, but all with an extraordinary simplicity of style. This is the first of five volumes of his work.
