Tshan-Di-Coo-Sah Lew Chew. [Caption Title].

(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). ( 1856). Stock ID #176824

Tinted lithograph, 15 x 23. 8 cm; 21.9 x 28.9 cm (sheet), upper and lower edge creased, but the image in very good condition.

View prepared for ''The Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan: performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854...'', by Wilhelm Heine with figures based on the daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. The American flag can be seen flying atop the building in the middle ground, but it is almost an afterthought: the focus of the picture are the Lew Chew coolies and the landscape.
