An idyllic view of traditional life drawn on the spot, "From nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about traditional life and customs on Lew Chew [Ryukyu].
