Manuscript I: 'A Highway, and an Old Chinese Doctor.' Lacks pages 1-3 including the title page. pp4-98. Untitled and unattributed but with numerous annotations by Alley in red and other annotations by another hand, possibly the editor. The book was published in 1973 by Caxton Press Christchurch New Zealand.
Manuscript II: A World of Long Ago: Preface by Alley - signed and dated Spring 1966 Peking. with a 23pp introduction by G.J. A. McArthur. 285pp plus 14pp pictographs handrawn in pencil. bibliography. There is no evidence that this manuscript was ever published- no books written by Alley having been published under this title, however the title could well have been changed.

MS II: The preface states: "There may be some who will ask why such a simple book of 'ifs' and 'maybees' should have been attempted at all. I first put it together in the early fifties and since then it has been neglected.... The account could come from any land really. That it comes from China, in which it has been my good fortune to live for the past four decades, perhaps makes it more useful than it would have been written elsewhere. With its long and continuous history, China is one of the great focal areas of human development. If these haphazard chapters do anything towards stimulating further study into human relationships the world over, in debunking tabus that lead men from the 'way' so that creative minds are liberated, and if too they lead to a further realisation that the peoples of the world are one and that the Chinese people who make up a quarter of it , are truly their brothers, then they have amply repaid the writer for his attempt in recording them."

Rewi Alley QSO MM (known in China as 路易•艾黎, Lùyì Àilí, 2 December 1897 – 27 December 1987) was a New Zealand-born writer and political activist. A member of the Chinese Communist Party, he dedicated 60 years of his life to the cause and was a key figure in the establishment of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives and technical training schools, including the Peili Vocational Institute (Bailie Vocational Institute or the Beijing Bailie University). Alley was a prolific writer about 20th century China, and especially the communist revolution. He also translated numerous Chinese poems. Wikipedia
