The striking engravings of the Barmiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, were part of "documenting" the northern Afghan border by the British-led Afghan Boundary Commission in 1884-6, and an attempt to allay territorial disputes with Russia in the Great Game that occupied much of the 19th Century.
