The Rock-cut statues of Bamian, Central Asia.

London. The Illustrated London News. November 13, 1886. Stock ID #177227

Four engravings on a single newspaper leaf (pp. 535-536), one half page, unrelated text on the verso, marginal browning, in very good condition.

Fine wood engravings by the artist William Simpson (1823-1899), famous for his work as an official war artist. The striking engravings of the Barmiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, were part of "documenting" the northern Afghan border by the British-led Afghan Boundary Commission in 1884-6, and an attempt to allay territorial disputes with Russia in the Great Game that occupied much of the 19th Century.

A remarkable period snapshot of relics tragically destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
