Colour folding sugoroku game, 54 x 78 cm. Neatly repaired with Japanese washi along folds and edges, some light general creasing, central fold shows a little wear but overall still gives a good and striking impression.

This sugoroku game was issued as a supplement in the January issue of "Shogaku 3-nensei" (Primary School Year 3), a popular monthly educational magazine, in 1937. The game starts with happy and enthusiastic young soldiers leaving home by train. As the game progresses the soldiers experience various forms of battle, including tanks, artillery, trenches, cavalry, air battles and sea battles. The goal, of course, being victory which is featured in the centre. The game depicts soldiers as heroic and brave, the type of young men who would fight against their enemies to achieve victory without question. It gives an interesting insight into the period and is quite surprising to most 21st century viewers that this graphic depiction of soldiers in battle could be targeted at 8 year old children. The game is designed mainly for boys, while girls' sole participation is to send letters and packets to front line soldiers.
