Colour pictorial map, sepia toned text and photographic illustrations on verso, 51 x 76 cm, on sheet 55 x 79 cm, folding as issued. A couple of tiny tears in margin repaired with archival washi, light wear to sheet, image is clean and bright.

An extraordinarily whimsical treatment of Japan's imperial aspirations.

The map, published by the Tokyo Nichinichi Newspaper Company as a New Year issue supplement in 1939, shows the products of the countries of East Asia in little pictographs. The animals, plants, and minerals found in each location are clearly illustrated - the areas of China and Korea are especially detailed.

On the verso is the text "news at a glance" with information on the provinces of China and Manchuria. Each country is decorated with its national flag, or the flag of its colonial ruler. There is also a small inset world map, showing transportation routes.

The inset at the bottom right is a list of trade in Chinese resources. Statistics such as the trade value of major commodities, trade value by major country, trade status of coal, cotton production, wool production, and wool export destinations, etc. are covered.
