Kimishibai complete with 16 colour cards with the story in Japanese text on the reverse, original protective envelope style card case, a little soiled and marked but has done its job of protecting the contents very well. 26.5 x 37.5cm. A very good set.

This educational kamishibai tells the story of Shinkichi, a country boy from a peasant background, who moved to Edo after the arrival of the Black Ships in the mid 1850s. After witnessing the foreign ships, he worked in Edo as an employee of a kimono retailer. One day, he is sent to collect a payment for silk thread his master sold to a Western trader, but is chased and bitten by a large dog that kept by the foreigner to deter Japanese debt collectors. Shinkichi realises he cannot get justice due to the extraterritoriality based on the Ansei Unequal Treaty between Japan and Western nations.

The story offers information on the historical and social changes towards the end of Edo Period through Shinkichi's eyes. On the reverse of the illustrations text gives both the story and suggestions for the most effective tone of voice to use to make the presentation dramatic. The publication was supervised by the Teachers Association and the aim was also to make the illustrations fairly accurate as this kamishibai was published as an educational resource.
