This richly illustrated guide to manners for young girls is a fascinating sample of the type of moral education given to young Japanese girls in the 1920s and1930s. Published as a supplement to a popular girls' magazine, Shojo Kurabu (Girls' Club) to mark its centennial issue, it was probably published around 1930. The foreword emphasises the importance of femininity and humility as important virtues which Japanese women must display, alongside of course obedience and respect of parents. The majority of images show urban middle class domestic or social settings. The text tells us that the young women photographed are daughters of respectable families in Tokyo!
