Colour pictorial birds-eye view map, inset map and photographic image at bottom corners, black and white photographic illustrations, 54 x 78 cm, text on reverse in Japanese. Occasional light browning. A light shadow of the image is visible on the panel opposite in one area but overall a very handsome map in very good condition.

This stunning colour bird's-eye view poster pictorial map shows the Kyushu Island region around Kirishima near Kagoshima, beautifully illustrating its mountains, active volcanos, a water fall, forests, hot springs and some shrines. Located at the southern end of Kyushu the region is well known as the place the Japanese creation myths in Takachiho and Kirishima.

The purpose of this striking publication was to sell blocks of land near Kirishima and to thereby preserve this sacred area by growing cedars and Japanese cypresses on it. 1940 marked the 2600th year since the creation of Japan and this advertisement capitalised on the patriotic sentiments prevalent at the time. We have not been able to ascertain whether or not this scheme went ahead. It appears to us today a rather dubious offering. The price was 30 yen for 100 tsubo land, and the trees would be planted for free by the development company within a year for no extra fee. Whether or not this offering was legitimate one or not, the start of the Pacific War would most likely caused major disruptions for the investors in any case.
