The civil war in China (1850-64), also known as the Taiping Rebellion, erupted northward from Guangxi to the Yangtze. This image shows the bombardment of the East Gate at Fungwha (Fenghua) by guns from British vessels HMS Encounter and Sphinx on 9 October 1862. The battle was fiercely fought. The engraving is after a drawing by A.D. McArthur, a paymaster in the Royal Navy. (See the catalogue note which accompanies their holding of the original drawing at Royal Museums Greenwich online).
