Two half-page engravings (14.5 x 23 cms), on a single newspaper leaf, complete descriptive text for each engraving, scant spotting and edge-wear, but in very good condition.

Two engravings published during the months prior to the attack on (and four year occupation of) Canton (Guangzhou) by allied British and French troops during the time of the Second Opium War. The commentary on the upper image notes the tactics of Chinese "pirates", the specifics their vessels and their use of the incendiary "stinkpot". The inset engraving of an "infernal machine" describes their use in the attempted sabotage of the British vessel "Encounter"
The lower engraving depicts the long line of defences at the entrance to Shanghai Harbour and is described in commentary overleaf.
