東都. [Toto]. 高津伊助. [Kozu Izuke]. Tenmei 4 [ 1784]. First Edition. Stock ID #179926

Complete in 2 volumes. Illustrated throughout with very attractive colour woodblock prints, 30.5 x 21.5 cm, Volume 1: 21 double folded leaves; Volume 2: 17 double folded leaves. Both volumes bound in four hole considerably worn Japanese stab paper bindings. The contents show some largely light even browning, a little heavier on some leaves but the illustrations are bright. Inside upper cover of the first volume in stained in a number of places but this has not affected the contents. The two volumes are presented in a modern traditional Japanese light green silk covered book cover with title label and toggle ties. Silk covers a little faded in places. Still an attractive set.

The delightful illustrations depict a wide variety of Edo Japanese artisans at work. The images include a ceremonial hat maker, a carpenter, a glass blower, fan makers, a mask carver and an umbrella maker. Each illustration is delicately drawn and printed in colour accompanied by historical information on the craft and techniques. The depictions of tools, workshop layout, techniques and workers are intriguing and charming. A delightful showcase of the rich tradition of craft and craftmanship in Japan.
