The original "Sanjuroku-nin kashu" (三十六人家集) is the oldest surviving collection of manuscript poems by 36 famous poets, including Kakinoue no Hitomaro and Ki no Tsurayuki. The collection has been designated as a National Treasure not only for the poems, but also for the elaborate paper and volume decorations. The oldest copies from around 1100 are stored at Nishi Honganji in Kyoto. By the 12th century this collection ran to 39 volumes.

This publication from 1964 consists of 2 volumes: a reproduced volume from the collection and a volume with commentaries in Japanese and English. This modern reproduction shows the beautiful colours of the original paper with poems in calligraphy. Printing quality is excellent. The original paper was decorated with combination of different types of paper with gold and silver decorations. A small sample of the intricately combined paper (6.7 x 4.5cm) is included in the set. The commentary volume shows the original volume in black and white photographic illustrations and discusses the types of paper and poems.
