能登川驛前商店商賣繁榮雙六. [Shōbai han'ei sugoroku].<BR> [Notogawa Station's Thriving Businesses' Sugoroku Game].
東京. [Tokyo]. 三興社. [Sankōsha]. Showa 10 [ 1935]. Stock ID #223775 This fascinating and colourfully illustrated sugoroku game was published in 1935, at the height of the textile industry in Notogawa, a town on the shore of Lake Biwa. Around the time of the game’s publication, the area had become a thriving textile centre. The local textile factory employed more than 1,000 workers, and many businesses grew up to serve the workers and their families. When referring to this item please quote stockid 223775.
Colour sugoroku game sheet, 55 x 79cm. Few tiny holes and light wear along folds, some browning on reverse. Very good.
As many of those employed in the industry were young women, the sugoroku features businesses likely to appeal to them, including cosmetics shops, kimono shops and a photographic studio. The game was therefore both an entertaining pastime and a form of advertising, encouraging consumerism among young women with their own income.
The textile industry later declined, and the factory finally closed around 2000. Today, Notogawa is a quiet small town with only a few shops remaining.
Price: $450.00 AU
