Two coloured chromolithograph frontispieces with tissue guards and 1uncoloured aquatint dated 1839, lacking the map. Two volumes, half calf with marbled boards, spines in compartments with raised bands, spines have been rebacked at some stage, and the original spine has been laid-down, some flaking of the leather has occurred, new endpapers with the inner hinge of volume I, re-enforced with Japanese style paper, other hinges cracked but secure. A small blind embossed stamp with the prior owner name is on a few of the preliminaries The plates and preliminaries are faintly foxed at the edges with some age toning throughout. xxix + 422pp; xii + 440pp. 21.4 x 13pp. The binding is a little rubbed and scuffed but good firm copies.

Elphinstone (1779 - 1859) was an administrator with the East India Company, who in 1808, was sent by the British Indian authorities on a mission to Afghanistan for the purpose of concluding an agreement with the Afghan ruler, Shah Shuja Durrani. His account, became a standard work, relied upon for decades by the British and other Europeans as a source of information about Afghanistan.
