Author of Friendship in Art: Fou Lei and Huang Binhong -Claire Roberts Speaks at Asia Bookroom

Thursday, Nov 11, 2010

Have you ever looked at a Chinese painting and wondered how to understand it?

In her new book Friendship in Art, art historian and curator Claire Roberts examines brush-and-ink paintings by one of modern China’s most important artists, Huang Binhong (1865-1955), through the prism of his friendship with the cosmopolitan Europhile and translator, Fou Lei (1908-66). Through letters, paintings, photographs and writings exchanged between the two men, Claire Roberts illuminates the complex dynamics of Chinese visual culture in the throes of modernisation. Dr Roberts will discuss the research she conducted for this book and the beginning of her own involvement with Chinese brush-and-ink painting as a student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in the late 1970s.

Dr. Claire Roberts is a Research Fellow, with Geremie R Barmé’s Australian Research Council funded Federation Fellowship, at The Australian National University. She was a Research Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute For Advanced Study at Harvard University 2009-10.
