pp, tables, commentaries printed in smaller font alongside the original text. A little light foxing, minor wear extremities, good copy in hardback. Text in traditional Chinese. Shiben or "Book of Origins", is one of the earliest Chinese classics recorded. The text is made up of Chinese imperial genealogies, discoveries and inventions from China's prehistoric period (circa 2852 BC to 2070 BC) to the late Spring and Autumn period (771-476 BCE). The work was originally divided into 15 subjects. Since Han Dynasty, many scholars have written commentaries on Shiben. The Han scholar 宋衷 [Song Zhong]'s commentary was widely copied in later editions however unfortunately, since the Tang Dynasty, some parts of contents of the Shiben have been gradually lost. This edition of this famous work was compiled into one volume by Commercial Press in 1957. It contains eight different versions of Shiben by eight Qing scholars [Wang Zicai]).
