Japanese copper engraved folding map of Hiogo and Kobe in Meiji period, paper title label laid down on upper cover. Scale not given, inset map in bright yellow showing the Kobe foreign settlement with detailed number allocation (1-126). Compass lower left oriented to the north. List of distances from 相生橋 the Aioi Bridge to various places inset upper left. Some browning in places along folds, neatly repaired 3.2cm closed tear along one fold, small section of loss at one fold. Original yellow paper covers stained in a few places. Text in Japanese and English. Map measures 39.2 cm x 56.5 cm, folded 11.5 x 17.8cm.

Attractive illustrated map of Kobe and Hyogo, mostly in Japanese, but with the title "Map of Hiogo and Kobe" written in English, and an inset of the foreign section of Kobe (with the location and numbers of individual house marked), including the words "custom house" and "bonded warehouses" in English. The map was published in the relatively early days of the Kobe foreign settlement, and was clearly designed to appeal to foreign as well as Japanese customers. The top right and left corners of the map contain detailed painted illustrations of the hills behind the towns, showing the Nagata Shrine and Mount Suwa. The map has shrines and temples, as well as public buildings such as the ward office and police stations, marked in red. Produced and published by "Hyogo Prefecture commoner" Kurita Fukusaburo.
