Japanese manuscript written in calligraphy, issued by the influential Japanese Zen Buddhist temple Tōfuku-ji, awarding a Japanese monk 花伯齊 the honourable title of 法橋[(Hokkyō]. This title is the third highest rank is given to the Buddhist sculptors and is followed by the first and second ranks 法印 [Hōin] and 法眼 [Hōgen]. Certificate folded in original envelope, two chops on corners, some light foxing on sheet and envelope, small holes on folds on envelope, otherwise in good condition. Text in Japanese. 19.3 x 53.5 cm when folded, sheet measures 38.5 x 53.5cm.

The temple was built in 1236 on the instructions of Kujo Michiie, but unfortunately has been destroyed by fire a number of times since then.
