Hand coloured copper engraved Japanese world map on the Mercator projection, folds into original cloth covered card covers with title label, housed in original cloth case with toggles, scale not given but supplemented by latitude and longitude. Upper section: a world map; lower section: explanatory notes, legend and publication details. Decorative national flags of the world border the map. A preface by a French-speaking linguist 村上義茂 [Murakami Yoshishige] dated Meiji 3 (1870) at the lower edge of the map. This map was engraved by 松田緑山 [Matsuda Ryokuzan]. Some worming, a little browning along two folds. Text in Japanese. 123 x 98cm folding to 25 x 17cm.

The considerable amount of text beneath the map gives brief geographical descriptions such as major cities, railroad networks, measurements, currencies, etc. Explanatory notes upper cover cloth case and lower section on map state that this map was based on a map published in Meiji 3 (1870) by the American ミッチェール [Micchēru], most likely the prolific geographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1790-1868). Interestingly, the publisher mistakenly address ミッチェール as a British teacher. Australia is named both " New Holland" and Australia".
