Putnam Weale was the name under which Bertram Lenox Simpson (1877- 1930) wrote many books about China. He is best known for his works of non fiction on China but he also wrote a number of novels of which this is one. Born in England he followed his father into the Chinese Maritime Customs Service leaving the service in 1901. He wrote a great deal about China in the years that followed and became deeply involved in Chinese politics. He was murdered in 1930 and it seems possible that his murder was of a political nature though motive nor killer was ever found.
