Edinburgh. Oliver & Boyd. 1952. Stock ID #174514

Endpaper maps, black and white photographic frontispiece and 16 photographic illustrations. Red cloth covered boards, illustrated with a green flag and yellow St. Andrew Cross - the 'Customs Jack' - the distinctive emblem required to mark Chinese Customs Cruisers and floating property designed by Horatio Nelson Jack - the grand-uncle of the author . xiii +241pp. A beautiful copy in the original dust wrapper that has unfortunately been taped on most of the edges but has done its duty in protecting the book in an almost pristine state. Loosely inserted is a complimentary slip from the publisher presumably to accompany the book, and a newspaper clipping. There is also a typed letter signed by the author in its original envelope. The letter was sent to the wife of Group Captain Gordon Dunlop at the Canadian Legation in Stockholm in 1953. His signature is on the front free endpaper of the book dated 1953. In the letter there are reminiscences of Arthur Lay's own time in Stockholm where he mentions seeing Josephine Baker at the Kina Theatre in 1932 and goes on to describe his enthusiasm for Lapland, China, Japan and Korea.

An autobiography of the Scottish Lay family and their long association with China and the Far East
