Tinted lithograph 39.2 x 28.5cm, 50 x 33.5 (sheet size), publisher's blind stamp of the Dumont D'Urville voyage at the foot, dampstaining to the inner margin affecting one of the figures, foxing affecting two of the figures and the lower margins of the plate, three marginal tears (no loss), tape residue to the verso of the plate, otherwise in good condition.

Plate 129 from the "Atlas historique" to Jules-Sébastien-César Dumont d'Urville, "Voyage de la corvette l'Astrolabe exécuté pendant les années 1826-1827-1828-1829 …". This remarkable three-year expedition (and circumnavigation) returned to Marseille on 25 March 1829, with an impressive load of hydrographical papers and collections of zoological, botanical and mineralogical reports. The present illustration with five portrait studies of people of the Moluccas (Maluku Islands) and Indonesia is by the voyage artist Louis Auguste de Sainson (1800-1874).
