A string of 10 hand printed flags on crepe paper 33 x 24cm with paper corner supports to hold the cords. The Japanese flag is torn with 6cm loss at lower corner, a few closed tears and some light creases on some flags but generally in exceptional condition for such an ephemeral item. The original decorated paper wrappers are present with some neat archival repairs.

A hand-painted Japanese collection of flags of the world, probably produced as bunting to be hung up to celebrate a significant event. The countries represented are Japan (both the standard rising sun flag and the military flag with rays), France, the United States, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Greece, Thailand, Manchukuo, the United Kingdom and Italy (showing the design of flag used by the Kingdom of Italy in the interwar years. The collection clearly seems to date from the 1930s, since the Manchukuo flag was first used in 1932. The flags are joined by cords, allowing them to be strung up in a street or hall. They may have been produced to celebrate the founding of the state of Manchukuo - either for a public ceremony or for instructional use in classrooms or similar.
