Large format albumen print photograph, 21.7 x 28 cm, captioned and signed in the negative, with a horizontal crease, mounted on thick card (browning, corners bumped, with an edge tear not affecting the image), 26.5 x 35 cm, the print with very good tone.

Scarce example of Hippolyte Arnoux's work, one of the the first commercial photographers to produce large scale images of Egypt. He worked on the project document works on the Suez Canal. His studio was in Place Ferdinand de Lesseps, Port Said’s main square. Along with with the Zangazi Brothers, he exhibited a large number of photos at the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1889.
