Attractive colour illustrated paper wrappers, black and white photographic illustrations and line illustrations, 4 + 51pp, 24 x 17 cm. Staples a little rusted but still holding, some light age toning to edges but a very good copy of a scarce piece of ephemera.

Kabuki was and is a very popular form of entertainment in Japan where all male casts play both male and female roles. This beautifully produced Kabuki performance program was printed for the March 1936 at Kabuki-za in Tokyo when one of the most well-known pieces, "Kanadehon Chushingura", was performed over 8 acts. Chushingura, also known as "47 Ronins" in the West, is one of the most popular Kabuki stories, which deals with samurai loyalty, revenge and redemption. This particular performance at the Kabuki Theatre covers the whole story from beginning to end and traditionally would go from afternoon to evening. The program tells the storyline with illustrations and performing actors. The last 11 pages contain short essays by Kabuki actors on their experience in performing the specific roles in this play.
