Tinted lithograph 23.3 x 15.7 cm, 28.9 x 21.6 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, lower corners with small paper abrasions, but in very good condition.

Striking group portrait of a temple priest and monks from Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, from a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
