View by Wilhelm Heine prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry's expedition visited Simoda (Shimoda) in April-May 1854. The view records the funeral of a young American sailor, who perished in an accident aboard the vessel Powhatan (Perry's flagship, a steam frigate, seen at anchor in the background, along with two three other vessels).
