Stately view by Wilhelm Heine prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan..." recording a diplomatic moment with far-reaching consequences. Perry's expedition (1852-4) had been given the task (as outlined in President's letter) of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Japan, effectively beginning a process of "opening" Japan to the West.
