A view of the famous Whampoa pagoda rendered on the spot ("From nature") by William Heine with figures from a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Bronwn, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry visited Whampoa on the Canton river in 1853, and his narrative noted in addition to the pagoda's religious significance, "its usefulness as a land mark by foreign vessels for they steer and anchor by its bearings."
