A view from "from Nature" by William Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". The expedition's artist William Heine, is depicted in the middle picture. Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, the serene bucolic scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist.
