(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). [circa 1856.]. Stock ID #176642

Tinted lithograph 15.2 x 22.6 cm, 22.1 x 28.8 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, lower edge ragged, but the image in very good condition.

View by official artist, Wilhelm Heine of the representation by Commodore Perry to Shuri Castle in Okinawa in June, 1853. It was an impressive, and intended, show of force, not lost on the Japanese hosts. The view depicts the Shureimon Gate: shurei meaning "observing manners" or courtesy: a highly symbolic image prepared for the official account by Perry & Hawks, "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...".
