Temple of Hatch-Man-Ya-Chü-Ru Simoda. Sintoo. [Caption Title]

(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). (Circa 1856). Stock ID #176648

Tinted lithograph with original hand colour 22.5 x 15.2 cm, 28.8 x 22.3 cm (sheet), outer edge a little age-toned, and inner edge a trifle ragged, but the image in very good condition.

A fine view of a Shinto Temple in Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a painting on the spot ("from nature") by William Heine and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". In the foreground two men are abasing themselves before a passing noble or priest. Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
