(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). [ 1856.]. Stock ID #176649

Tinted lithograph with original hand colour 15 x 22.3 cm, 22.5 x 28.8 cm (sheet), some offsetting to the lower edge of the image, lower margin a trifle ragged, and a few marginal spots, but the image in very good condition.

A finely detailed view of the interior of a Buddhist Temple in Simoda (Shimoda) showing monks at prayer, after a painting on the spot ("from nature") by William Heine and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
