(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). [circa 1856.]. Stock ID #176739 A view capturing the first landing of Commodore Matthew Perry's (1794-1858) fleet in Japan, which was to have lasting ramifications. Perry's mission was to open Japan to international trade, with the tacit threat of gunboat reprisals. This show of force resulted in the signing on 31 March 1854 of the Convention of Kanagawa. The view by the expedition artist, Wilhelm Heine was prepared for Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...".
