Tinted lithograph 21.8 x 15.5 cm, 28.8 x 22.5 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, small stain affecting the margin of one lower corner, inner edge ragged, but the image in very good condition.

Fine cameo portrait of the Chief Magistrate Napha, Lew Chew, (Ryukyu) Japan, prepared for the official account "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879.
