Stock ID #176753 A tranquil view of Napha, Lew Chew, (Ryukyu) Japan, prepared for the official account "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry's fleet can be seen at anchor in the distance. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. When referring to this item please quote stockid 176753.
