Portraits after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown prepared for the official account of Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry's squadron visited Simoda (Shimoda) in April-May 1854. Pictured here are the Mayor (Kura-Kawa-Kahai) of Shimoda with attendants. Perry's Narrative records in detail the traditional way of life and customs of Shimoda.
