Funchal Madeira from the Curral. [Caption title].

(Washington). (A.O.P. Nicholson). [circa 1856.]. Stock ID #176788

Tinted lithograph 15.3 x 22.4 cm, 22.4 x 28.6 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner stained, lower edge creased and a little ragged, but the image in very good condition.

A view from "from Nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, this serene and charming scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist. Perry's squadron is depicted at anchor in the background.
