Engraving on watermarked laid paper, 37.1 x 42.6 cm, 44.1 x 49.7 cm (sheet) central fold, edge toning, the two upper corners strengthened with tape on the verso, a very good dark impression.

Fine, highly detailed engraving prepared for the elaborate multi volume work "Atlas Historique" by (amongst others), cartographer Henri Chatelain (1648-1743), depicting a war of succession between the four Mughal princes, sons of Shah Jahan. His third son, Aurangzeb (c. 1618-1707) was victorious. Under his rule the Mughal Empire reached its fullest extent, covering almost all of South Asia.
