Investigating the Composition of the Great Wall of China. [Caption title].
London. The Graphic. September 15, 1894. Stock ID #177262 Engravings by Charles Joseph Staniland, social realist and genre painter, one of the stalwarts of the British 19th Century illustrated newspaper, The Graphic, after sketches by the marine artist Charles William Cole. Arranged as a storyboard the rather "Boy's Own" illustrations and lighthearted captions narrate the going ashore of marines to "souvenir" stones from the Great Wall of China and to test their composition (but not in any scientific way). The final caption concludes "...it is discovered that the bricks possess the merits, only more enhanced, of those coming from Bath...". When referring to this item please quote stockid 177262.
