Collection of 12 colour lithographs, each sheet 19 x 25cm. Light scattered foxing, some staining to some sheets, insect damage to margins of five sheets (outside image area), diagonal crease to margin of one sheet; good condition overall.

These 12 delicately coloured beautiful lithographs show how women should elegantly behave according to traditional Japanese values. Each illustration is complemented with instructions, on such topics as how to wear a kimono properly, how to serve tobacco on a tray, how to stand up elegantly and how to serve food to guests. Towards the end of the 19th century, prints such as these were used in the education system to teach young girls the correct patterns of behaviour. These illustrations by Watanabe Takahisa, an artist active during the Meiji Period, whose work also included portraits of the Meiji Emperor.
