Colour folding map, 78 x 53.5 cm, light creasing, repaired tear in upper top right margin not affecting the image, tiny separation at one fold and along upper right fold line, light foxing to two outer panels but only one small spot visible on map side. Overall very good condition.

A detailed and fascinating map issued by the Japanese newspaper Osaka Mainichi Shimbun (大阪毎日新聞), situating Japan and its empire in the western Pacific Ocean bordered by China, Southeast Asia and northern Australia. The significance to Japan (and later to the U.S.) of the Mariana Islands (a mandate territory of Japan) with its central location in the Pacific is clearly shown. The Japanese Empire includes Korea (Chosen朝鮮) and Taiwan. Manchukuo (満州国) is a Japanese protectorate. At right is a small inset map of the Hawaiian Islands. The comparison of the power of army, navy and air force between Japan, USA, UK, France and Italy; Japanese army military preparation; the power of Manchurian army; the power of Chinese army; the power of Far Eastern Russian army are listed at the lower edge. An extraordinary map from 1933 clearly showing Japan's situation under tense power struggles.

The timing of the publication of this map at the beginning of 1933 is rather interesting as it was at this time that Japan was being increasingly isolated within the international community following their founding of Manchukuo in 1932. Japan eventually left the League of Nations in March 1933.
